Curriculum
We believe that young children learn best by active learning. We provide this type of learning while incorporating Phonics skills which are presented using the ABeka curriculum and the exciting program, Land of the Letter People. We present Math skills using a hands-on approach to learning and the ABeka curriculum. Your child will gain a love for learning and a solid foundation in phonics and math.
Preschool (3 and 4 year olds)
We strive to prepare children socially, emotionally, physically, and cognitively for kindergarten. We endeavor to offer your child a positive school experience. We offer all subject areas including music, art, and Physical Education.
We believe literacy is an important aspect of education. The ABeka and the Land of the Letter People curriculum are excellent resources in language development and introducing preschoolers to the alphabet and their phonetic sounds. The ABeka curriculum also includes instruction in phonics blends and one vowel words. However, we allow the children to learn at their individual levels and will only proceed when the child is ready. Math skills such as number recognition, counting, sequencing, and patterns are taught using manipulatives and hands on activities. The ABeka curriculum also incorporates fine motor skills like writing and cutting. The children have opportunities to develop their social and cognitive skills while interacting in the learning center areas of blocks, home living, manipulatives, books, art, computer, math, science, and listening. We use the ABeka flashcards for our Bible and verses that are taught are from the King James Version.
Kindergarten (5 years old)
Welcome to our kindergarten program at Shenandoah Baptist Academy. Our kindergarteners must be 5 years old before September 31st of the school year enrolled. We endeavor to provide our kindergartners with the knowledge they need to succeed in first grade.
We use the ABeka curriculum that instills the foundation elements needed in all subject areas. In phonics, children learn special sounds which aid them in reading one and two vowel words. Their math skills consist of before and after numbers, counting, clock, adding, and introduction to subtraction. They begin manuscript writing and towards the end of the school year they are introduced to cursive writing. ABeka curriculum also incorporates social studies by introducing the children to community helpers and different continents around the world. The ABeka flashcards are used for our Bible and verses that are taught are from the King James Version. The children also participate in weekly art, music, and physical education classes. |
